Health insurance for foreigners in Serbia

In short: foreign nationals applying for a temporary residence permit in Serbia need health insurance. If you are not covered by the Serbian state system through employment, you need a local voluntary health insurance policy for foreigners, issued by an insurer licensed by the National Bank of Serbia. It is valid in Serbia only and covers emergency care, doctor visits and hospital treatment caused by sudden illness or accident.

Who needs it

Students, family members, digital nomads, retirees and entrepreneurs who are not registered for mandatory insurance in Serbia. Employees registered with the Serbian Health Insurance Fund (RFZO) are covered through their employer, but many companies add private insurance as a benefit.

What it covers

  • Emergency medical care and transport
  • Outpatient treatment: doctor visits, diagnostics, prescribed medicines
  • Hospital treatment after sudden illness or accident
  • Up to the sum insured shown on the policy

Pre-existing and chronic conditions are usually excluded. The policy is valid on the territory of Serbia only.

Documents

A copy of the passport data page and the residence registration (the white card from the police). Some insurers also ask for a short health questionnaire. Companies can buy a group policy for foreign employees.

Is a foreign policy accepted?

For the residence permit the police usually require a policy from an insurer licensed in Serbia. International expat policies are often not accepted — check with the police administration before applying.
